Fluminense lost the opportunity to play in the group stage of the CONMEBOL Libertadores Cup, as it was defeated by Paraguay’s Olimpia 4-1 in the penalty shootout Wednesday night (Mar. 16) at the Defensores del Chaco stadium, in Asunción, Paraguay. Now the Brazilian team will have to be content with its participation in the South American Cup.

As they won the deciding match for the third stage prior to the continental tournament 3-1, Fluminense arrived for the duel in Paraguay with a considerable advantage, as it could qualify directly even with a defeat by a one-goal difference. Olimpia had to win with at least a two-goal gap to vie for qualification in the penalty shootout. That’s precisely what the home team did. They won during regulation time 2-0.

Following the disqualification, Fluminense is expected to play in the South American championship, joining Brazilian teams Atlético-GO, Ceará, Cuiabá, Santos, Internacional, and São Paulo.
